Buy this cartridge rather than refill it.

Black and Color Cartridges

  1. Cover the outlet hole with the orange seal that came with the cartridge or good tape to seal the hole to prevent leakage.
  2. Drill a hole into the "N" of the name Canon with the small drill provided.
  3. Attach the needle to the syringe and fill with the correct color ink.
  4. SLOWLY inject 6 ml of BLACK INK or 3 ml of COLOR INK into the hole. Wait 30 seconds for the sponge to absorb the ink, then add an additional 2 ml of BLACK INK or 1 ml of COLOR INK.

Note: On the XL cartridge the first "empty" chamber has an additional 1 ml of ink. On the XXL cartridge the first and second "empty" chambers have an additional 2 ml of ink.

  5. You do not have to seal the drilled hole.
  6. Remove the seal from the ink outlet on the bottom of the cartridge (orange seal or tape).
  7. Replace the cartridge and run 2-3 cleaning cycles per your printer instructions.

Note: There is a chip on the cartridge that keeps track of the ink level. Once you refill the cartridge, it will read the same level as before you refilled it. continue to use the cartridge until the printer's readout screen says, "The ink has run out. Replace the ink tank." At that point the "STOP" indicator will light along with the triangle-circle right below it. Press and hold the triangle-circle until the "STOP" and triangle-circle indicators go out. This will turn the chip off, and you can continue to print.

You may have to do this twice. If you remove the cartridge and re-insert it, you will have to repeat this procedure.

To use the syringe and needle in the kit:

  • Lock the needle into the syringe with a twisting motion.
  • Remove the ink bottle cap.
  • Insert the needle through the bottle seal.
  • Draw the ink up into the syringe.
  • Insert the needle into the inkjet cartridge. SLOWLY push the syringe plunger down to inject the ink into the cartridge.
  • Inject any excess ink in the syringe back into the ink bottle.
  • Rinse the syringe and needle with warm water after use to prepare the syringe for the next color.

Please review before attempting refill procedure

  • Ink bottles have a dot label on the bottle identifying the color.
  • Work in a suitable area so that any spillage or drips are contained.
  • Ink is permanent and will stain clothing, etc.
  • Read the complete instructions for your cartridge before beginning the refill procedure.
  • Do NOT touch any of the electronic contacts of the cartridges.
  • Do NOT let ink cartridge dry out.
  • Refill the cartridge immediately after removal from the printer.
  • Inject ink very slowly to avoid injecting air bubbles. Do NOT overfill.
  • Always recap partially used ink bottles for storage.
  • Exposure to air for long periods of time will cause the ink to deteriorate.
  • If cartridge leaks after refilling, let the cartridge stand in an upright position for 5 minutes on a dry paper towel.
  • Immediately install the refilled cartridge in the printer.
  • More than one cleaning or printing cycle may be required for some cartridges.
